Metallicus Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 Evening Gents Since my Huey is at the main painting stage I thought I would start cutting plastic on this. I have been looking forward to this build since the kit landed on my doorstep some months ago..... There will be lots of (attempted) scratch building and modifications along the way. Wish me Luck...I'm going to need it!!! Here are a few shots starting with the obligatory box and sprue shots. Now onto the build..... [-o< I decided to start on the main rotor hub and tail rotor and was rather surprised by the amount of parts required.. there are 2 sprues containing the parts and with rather nice detail. I have built up the main rotor hub so far using only the kit parts (21 parts so far another 12 to go) and have started to detail them. Till next time thanks for looking! Cheers Brenden
PaulT 876 Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 Hi If you need detail ref this, i have the French Manaul ie AP as we called them in the RAF on this a/c . I all so have 60 photos off this a/c in detail. I got the early version of this kit quite some time ago for £10.00, its a big kit and needs time to do. See Ya Paul
Dr.Jellyfingers Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 That looks complicated and fiddley, nice work on the plumbing! Si.

See Ya Paul Hi Paul Thanks, I can never have to many refs, I drop you a PM. That looks complicated and fiddley, nice work on the plumbing!Si. Thanks Si, thankfully it is in 1/35 so it's not too fiddly but I still have about another 15-20 wires to add for the hydraulics.... so I might just retract that statement. Cheers Brenden
Radleigh Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 Can you still get this kit? Always wanted one...
Vulcanicity Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 Interesing stuff, I wasn't even aware there was a kit of the Super Frelon. Funny scale though...!
kev67 Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 If only they could make a good 1/72 Super Frelon, not the Mach2 version though
Shar2 Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 Can you still get this kit? Always wanted one... They occasionally pop up on Ebay. There's this version and one with Exocet which is harder to find. I'll be keeping an eye on this as I have one in the stash which may be built one day.

Metallicus Posted October 27, 2011 Author Posted October 27, 2011 Going to be watching this one! Thanks Bud Can you still get this kit? Always wanted one... yeah they pop up every now and again on Flea Bay, just watch out sometimes they go for crazy prices though!! Interesing stuff, I wasn't even aware there was a kit of the Super Frelon. Funny scale though...! It goes nicely with my other 1/35 stuff, Cobra's, Huey's and Blackhawk's. If only they could make a good 1/72 Super Frelon, not the Mach2 version though Hi Kev I think Mach 2 is the only 1/72 vendor... They occasionally pop up on Ebay. There's this version and one with Exocet which is harder to find.I'll be keeping an eye on this as I have one in the stash which may be built one day. Thanks Shar, yeah it took me awhile to build up the courage to attempt this build.. big bugger, looking forward to this. Thanks Moofles, yip really big bugger!! Thanks for all the comments lads Cheers Brenden
heloman1 Posted October 30, 2011 Posted October 30, 2011 Hi Brenden, I think there is a Frelon main rotorhead standing in the open in the SAAF Museum at Swartkops John Bladerunner lives just around the corner from there he may be able to get some pics for you. Otherwise you could go and look on the IPMS SA website on the knowledge base, there are some good walkround pics there www.ipmssa.org.za There seems to be a fair amount of cleaning up required but then the kit has been around a good few years. Metallicus Posted October 31, 2011 Author Posted October 31, 2011 An interesting build. Colin @ the bottom of Africa Hi Colin Been posting the build on the SAAF forum those guys have a wealth of knowledge when it come to SAAF birds and the IPMSSA site has loads of good refs that I have/will be working from but my biggest resource are a couple of guy's over on ARC, Norbert and Mygalle have built some truelly amazing Frelons. The clean up is going to be too bad but as you say it is a fairly old kit. Sorry guys no updates..... my weekend was taken up by Battlefield 3..... I just could not stop playing...... It is AMAZING!!!! Cheers Brenden
Metallicus Posted October 31, 2011 Author Posted October 31, 2011 Well I managed to tear myself away from Battlefield 3 for a couple of hours to finish the plumbing on the rotor head. I attached the folding mechanism for each blade and "wired" them up. Thanks for looking Cheers Brenden
Sean1968 Posted November 1, 2011 Posted November 1, 2011 Looking like an interesting build, I'll follow this one.

Gajman Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 (edited) That's looking really good! I managed to pop in to the SAAF museum at Swartkops on a recent trip back to SA and took loads of pics of their Frelon and I'm currently scratchbuilding one in 1/72 scale (using the Aviation News plans as well as the pics I took). I plan to watch your build to get ideas of detail to add to my build so keep going Brenden Gary Edited November 2, 2011 by Gajman
Dr.Jellyfingers Posted November 18, 2011 Posted November 18, 2011 How you doing with this, it's been a while !! Si.
Metallicus Posted January 3, 2012 Author Posted January 3, 2012 Hi gents Well I'm back after a couple of months off from modelling. I am hoping to continue the build over in the Big Scale Group Build. Hopefully it will give the kick up the buttocks that I need. Otherwise I'll just continue here as well. Hopefully I'll have an update in the next couple of days. Cheers Brenden
Metallicus Posted March 6, 2012 Author Posted March 6, 2012 Right gents I finally have some sort of progress for you and some photo's to go with it.... I have build up a lot of the part's and made some progress on cleaning and prepping parts for detailing and paint. Basic pit built up Tail rotor assembly 3 of 7 cabin seats done: Cabin floor after hot water, bending and putting and sanding. The 2 halves were so warped : A final pic of the parts ready for paint: Next job is to remove the black shaded area's: I'm really starting to enjoy this build so hopefully I'll keep the update's coming.
