Alan Hooker
Well, now I've finished the wife's Memphis Belle, I can get back to normality and get another Spook going. Next up, Hasegawa's 1/48th F-4B/N. Gonna do the F-4N VMFA-531 'Grey Ghosts' option. As usual, oob build with no extra's. Going to break with normal practice and put the crew in on this one. Contents will be familiar to you all, but here's the obligatory contents shot!
Alan Hooker
Pit done. Just a basic paintjob and dry-brush on the panels.

John B
WOW! I remember that kit! It was the first 1/48 Hasegawa Phantom kit I'd ever seen for sale. I'm remember being unable to afford such a "pricey Hasegawa" kit when I was used to saving up my pennies to buy the "reasonable Monogram" kit. I've only seen that same boxing again at Swap Meets with much-yellowed decals. Have you seen this? It was just put on-sale last week. It seems a little pricey for a decal sheet, but you do get a full array of stencils decals with the set. One idea might be to buy the sheet with someone else and split it. Here's a link to a review ->Review of -531 sheet I'm wishing that I started on a 1/48 Hasegawa F-4B/N instead of a Monogram F-4J - if only for that jet with the 892 NAS markings. I'm going to follow your build with deep interest (and a little bit of envy).

But compared to the prices their asking for new Hase' kits nowadays, it was a bargain! That sheet does look nice, but I must resist the temptation to splash the cash. Already spent my quota this month, according to the missus!! Plenty of tape and clamps. You can never be too careful!!
Alan Hooker
Main construction, filling and sanding done, and black areas applied. Next up, break out the masking tape and apply the main paintjob.

Already spent my quota this month, according to the missus!!... You, Sir, are a very cunning man! I commend you for... 1) finding that Hasegawa kit for a good price (the Hasegawa special boxing with the 892 markings is priced so much more.) 2) finding the first boxing of the kit (the latest boxings are showing signs of worn on the injection molds) ...and 3) finding the original release with decals in such good condition (every kit I'd seen at Swap Meets contained badly-yellowed decals). I'm glad that Impact Decals has released this VMFA-531 F-4 sheet... ...so that solves that decal problem. Continuing to watch this thread with a slight touch of envy... Alan Hooker
Well, thats the paintjob finished. Next up, gloss coat thenj decals. Simple scheme, but the markings will liven the old girl up nicely!
Alan Hooker
Decals all done, at last! Considering they're age, they worked pretty well overall.
John B
WOW! WOW! WOW! The addition of markings certainly took it from "ho-hum overall gray" to "Woo-hoo! Hi-Viz color". The "MARINES" on the side makes it all the the more menacing as well.* Certainly motivates me to pick up my tools and work on my Phantom kit. * Completely unscientific biased opinion. Alan Hooker
Well, she's done. In all honesty, I think it's the least favourite of the spooks I've built, but she'll fillm a space on the shelving till the next one's finished!
Jabba
Nice finish, the tail colours break up the grey scheme very well.
