Jabba Posted May 27, 2011 Posted May 27, 2011 Having just finished my latest model it is now time to start on this one. I am doing an aircraft from the Miichigan ANG as I am doing a series of 3 models from the Sqn and have already made a F-106A. Although the kit markings do carry an aircraft from the Michigan ANG I have chosen to use decals from Expert Choice as this has the nose art that I want. It comes from when the Sqn went to William Tell in the early 80s (I think) and I first saw it when SAM did an article on this event and I made a 1/72 model of the same aircraft I am doing here using the decal sheet that they produced. The nose art is appropriate to all modellers and is "Patience My bottom". I still have a few things to add to the AM stuff this being the U/C and a set of wheels which I will hopefully obtain soon. The box The sprues Instructions Kit decals Expert Choice decal sheet
Silver Fox Posted May 27, 2011 Posted May 27, 2011 God choice. I really like the way the Michigan ANG paint their flying machines. I did 'Don't Mess with the Kid' from the same sheet 0n a Monogram F-4C many moons ago after seeing her at Mildenhall where she ended up as a Battle Damage Repair airframe.
bexwh773 Posted May 27, 2011 Posted May 27, 2011 Nice set of markings Jabba, be nice to see this one done Bexy

Jabba Posted May 27, 2011 Author Posted May 27, 2011 AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just had a proper look at the kit this afternoon (it has been in the loft for many a year) and found that it has raised panel lines. Not looking forward to removing these as it took me quite a while when I was making the F-106. Luckily I have next week off from work so I might be able to do some of them then. Thanks for the earlier comments.
xlpainter Posted May 27, 2011 Posted May 27, 2011 Hi also built that scheme in 32nd using the cutting edge decals i bought at the last mildenhall air fete and a tamiya phantom i made never trust a smiling cat and the real aircraft is now in a museum in germany it is a mad looking scheme Simon
Julien Posted May 28, 2011 Posted May 28, 2011 I have to say, why bother removing the raised panel line, just go with the flow and build it. Most phantom pics I see you cant see the panel lines anyway! Nice choice of markings. There is a photo somewhere of one carrying 5 gunpods parked up at a show! Julien

I have seen that photo in a few Phantom books that I have.
Phartycr0c Posted May 29, 2011 Posted May 29, 2011 I LOVE this scheme superb choice in my book Look forward to the finished product.

Thanks for the earlier comments. First upper wing done. Now the next one.
Jabba Posted June 2, 2011 Author Posted June 2, 2011 First upper wing done. Now the next one. Second upper wing done. Lower one next.
Jabba Posted June 4, 2011 Author Posted June 4, 2011 I got the lower wing scribed at Salisbury today and most of one of the fuselage halves. I would have got it completed and possibly the other half too if the pin that I was using hadn't snapped. Will have to raid wifes sewing box again.
Jabba Posted June 6, 2011 Author Posted June 6, 2011 Raided wifeys sewing box last night getting a new pin and finished off the left hand fuselage and started the right hand one. I have noticed that Hasegawa have duplicated some of the panel on this side that are not wanted such as the RAT doors and the ladder, have never noticed this before on British Hasegawa Tombs. It also has the refuelling panel as a left over from a USN version, so all of those lines will disappear when I give the model a rub down after all the lines have been rescribed, which hopefully will not be too far away.
Jabba Posted June 9, 2011 Author Posted June 9, 2011 All the panel line that I want to rescribe at the moment have been done, just some that go over the fuselage and are on the lower wing to front fuselage to be done which will be when these parts are built up. So now it is on with the proper modelling which I will start very soon.
Jabba Posted June 17, 2011 Author Posted June 17, 2011 I have been doing some work on this model, but it is little and time seems to pass too quickly. I have painted up the cockpit and glued the wings together. I have also rescribed a few of the panel lines that go around the wing leading edge. I will hopefully give the whole model a light sand over to get rid of the panel lines that I have rescribed and then get on ith putting this together, plus I will cut the ailerons from the wings to be set in a droopy fashion a lot later. Any comments gratefully recieved.
Jabba Posted June 24, 2011 Author Posted June 24, 2011 Ailerons have now been removed and the fuselage has been joined together. I will have photos later, no time at the mo.
Jabba Posted June 25, 2011 Author Posted June 25, 2011 As promised some photos of the little progress that I have made. The first two photos show the fuselage now joined together and a few areas painted that needed to be done before more parts can be added. This photo shows the ailerons removed. Here are some of the aftermarket goodies that arrived this morning. I still have to get a new metal U/C and wheels. Here are all the bits loosely joined together. The intake halves have been joined together but not to the fuselage as they need to be rescribed. The fit of all the parts is very good, hopefully it will be that way when glue is added.
Enzo the Magnificent Posted June 25, 2011 Posted June 25, 2011 Looking good! Especially the rescribing. That's real modelling.
Jabba Posted July 2, 2011 Author Posted July 2, 2011 All stuck together now, the small intakes by the nose cone have been added and the last bit of rescribing around some of the joints has been carried out. There is a small amount of filling to be done then on with the job I hate of sanding. I have also removed all the small arials on the fuselage joint as they would only get in the way and get knocked off. Any comments gladly welcomed.
Jabba Posted July 15, 2011 Author Posted July 15, 2011 All sanding now done, and a bit of rescribing to be redone. I tried a bit of this last night and got it a little wrong, so it will be out with the filler to fill in the incorrect lines. I am also looking forward to the weapons to be carried on this model. I knw that it will be Sidewinders and fuel tanks on the wings, with Sparrows under the fuselage. I am wondering what if anything to put under the center fuselage. As iam looking for a normal ANG Air Defence load, would it be either nothing, Fuel tank or Gun pod?
Jabba Posted July 17, 2011 Author Posted July 17, 2011 (edited) Just a small update. Rescribing now done, wheel bays painted and inner wing pylons added. They now need a little filler, then it is hopefully on with the front windscreen and middle section, then painting of the main scheme. Edited July 17, 2011 by Jabba
bexwh773 Posted July 29, 2011 Posted July 29, 2011 Great work so far Jabba Looking forwards to seeing a bit more Bexy
Jabba Posted July 29, 2011 Author Posted July 29, 2011 Great work so far Jabba Looking forwards to seeing a bit more Bexy Unfortunately work has slowed on this one at the moment as I am trying to get a model finished for my next club night and I am waiting for a metal undercarriage to arrive at a traders, but don't worry too much it is still progressing.
