Alpha Delta 210 Posted May 22, 2011 Posted May 22, 2011 Hi Here is my Revell 1/32 Red Arrows Hawk. I built it straight from the box for the OOB GB. It is not without its problems (and I am a self-confessed mediocre modeller!) and despite getting frustrated with it on more than one occasion, I am happy with the finished result. I don't have an airbrush, so finished it with Halfords Fiat Orange. The build thread is here. And finally, for a size comparison, here is the Hawk with a 1/72 Airfix Sea Harrier, built for the Harrier GB:
Séan Pádraig Posted May 22, 2011 Posted May 22, 2011 I like it... it's nice to see this one in the Red Arrows scheme. The black ones lalso ook good but this is my prefered livery.
Julien Posted May 22, 2011 Posted May 22, 2011 Now that looks great. a pretty good colour match there. Julien
Alpha Delta 210 Posted May 23, 2011 Author Posted May 23, 2011 Dear All Thanks for all your kind words. As always, I have spotted a couple of minor issues with the model that require further attention - but they can wait! I am happy with the Halfords Fiat Red Orange, and have learned a lot about the value of using the correct primer. The airframe and larger parts were primed with white over the grey, but I ran out of white primer for some of the smaller parts that were still attached to the sprues and applied the red over grey primer. The result was a much darker red! I was concerned about "orange peel", as I am not a very proficient sprayer (resulting in some paint runs at one point!), but a couple of coats of Klear seemed to solve the problem leaving the beautiful gloss finish. I have another of these Hawks in the "to do" pile, but I will take a break before starting it because this has not been the most relaxing and enjoyable build. In fact, I said to my wife more than once "isn't a hobby supposed to give you pleasure!?" That said, I am pleased with the finished result and the kit represents exceptional value for money compared to certain far eastern offerings.
Vulcanicity Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 Lovely build, that colour looks spot-on. Mediocre my ar$e!
Muller Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 Beautiful build! I have 4 of these in the stash, I'm sneaking a new one into the house every month of so, I want to build nine Reds If they come out looking something like yours I'll be very happy.
Cycerath Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 Thats a very nice finish and build you have there. Good work and keep it up! Cy

Thanks for you comments, Muller. I'm sure yours will be great. It's all very well smuggling the kits in, but where are you going to display nine 1/32 scale Hawks without your better half noticing?! I picked another one up from Argos for £13.99 because I bought a new microwave oven that earned me £5 off my next purchase (which I had coincidentally already reserved online!)
Muller Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 It's all very well smuggling the kits in, but where are you going to display nine 1/32 scale Hawks without your better half noticing?! I have another unbuilt Ikea glass display case out in the shed she doesn't know about! LOL
Alpha Delta 210 Posted May 23, 2011 Author Posted May 23, 2011 I have another unbuilt Ikea glass display case out in the shed she doesn't know about! LOL Ooh, I love a cunning plan!
Alpha Delta 210 Posted May 23, 2011 Author Posted May 23, 2011 Can you believe it? In my absence, a 12 year old friend of my lad picked up the Hawk to inspect it, but brought it in for a very hard landing on the dining table resulting in a snapped main gear leg and a couple of broken aerials. Amazingly, I found all the bits and am now bracing myself to start the repairs. Grrr!
Iain Ogilvie Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 (edited) She's come out really well! As others have said - colour looks a great match! EDIT - just read bit about it's 'accident' - bu**er Iain Edited May 23, 2011 by Iain (32SIG)
Muller Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 (edited) Ouch! I know what that's like, it's like a finished model sitting on a desk is an irresistible object to some people, they HAVE to pick it up. Edited May 23, 2011 by Muller
Alpha Delta 210 Posted May 24, 2011 Author Posted May 24, 2011 Dear All Thanks for all your commiserations! I managed to stick on the little bits without too much trouble, but the port undercarriage leg would not repond to Loctite's finest at all! I finally resorted to some more drastic remedial action and braced the leg with a cut-down dressmaker's pin secured with Super Glue. This might not be how Messrs BAe Systems and Revell intended, but it seems to be supporting the weight! PS The offending child has been issued with an exclusion order (only kidding - I think!)
geedubelyer Posted June 24, 2011 Posted June 24, 2011 Whoa...! How'd I miss this? I think you're being a bit hard on yourself AD210. It looks like you've made a fine job of your Red Arrow Hawk. If I can end up with a finish half as good as that I'll be well chuffed. What a belter!
Alpha Delta 210 Posted June 26, 2011 Author Posted June 26, 2011 Thanks very much for your comments guys, I'm glad you like her. I hope Revell continue to produce kits of this standard at such a competitive price.
spitfire Posted June 26, 2011 Posted June 26, 2011 That is really nice, like a large majority of modellers I have a couple of those in the loft, looking at yours tends to make me want to build one soon. Cheers Den
