Fifer54 Posted April 12, 2011 Posted April 12, 2011 (edited) For the OOBGB, I will be building Airfix's DH88 Comet Racer. As you can see, it's the boxing currently on release, the subject being "Black Magic". An elderly kit, which reveals its age by its simplicity... If Ican manage a quick build, I may have time for another entry!... Edited May 9, 2011 by MadNurseGaz
plasmahal Posted April 12, 2011 Posted April 12, 2011 I have started one of these kits with my 9yr old daughter, does that mean we can be part of a GB?
Fifer54 Posted April 12, 2011 Author Posted April 12, 2011 I have started one of these kits with my 9yr old daughter, does that mean we can be part of a GB? Have a look at the rules for the GB. For most GBs, up to 25% complete before the start of the GB is allowed. I think the rules for this particular GB demand an unstarted kit, but you and your daughter could certainly take part with a different kit... If you keep an eye on the "Group Build Chat" and "Future GBs" sub-fora, you'll get to know what GBs are coming up and when. If you post in GB Chat that you'd like to take part in a particular GB, then your post may help to make a suggested GB happen, 'cos there has to be 15 intended participants for Mish (our resident GB co-ordinator) to schedule a GB. (Your post stating your intention is NOT binding.) The same applies to "Future GBs", although these are already scheduled, as they have achieved at least 15 participants already. If you know at this stage what model you intend to build, it's usual (though not required) to say what you'll build. When your chosen GB appears in "Current GBs", you simply post a "build thread", which starts with a post with pictures of your kit, usually a picture of the box, and 1 or more pictures to illustrate the sprues, decals and plans/instructions. Post pictures in your build thread whenever you have progress you consider worth showing, and when it's finished, post a few pictures of the finished model in the "Gallery" thread, along with a link to your build thread. See, it's easy, really, and my rubbish models don't get any (public(!)) adverse comments, so join in, there's no hoops to jump through. Don't be put off from taking part by seeing that others taking part are adding aftermarket goodies or decals to their models, that's just how they enjoy their hobby. I almost invariably build OOB, but I'd add goodies if I thought it appropriate... It seems as though you've started building this kit, so it wouldn't be eligible for this GB, but in the future you and your daughter could take part in GBs! Or you could do this GB with a different kit! We have several members whose children occasionally take part in GBs. The "Airfix Starter Kit" GB had several junior participants. (Go on, look it up in "Completed GBs"!) Go for it, plasmahal, you know you want to! Everyone here wants to see GBs happen, and it's always the more, the merrier! I hope this has been helpful, and has encouraged you to "do" a GB. I'll look forward to seeing you take part!
Fifer54 Posted April 23, 2011 Author Posted April 23, 2011 A little progress on this, it could be a quick build if it wasn't such a bad fit! I've decapitated the crew and smoothed out the "decking" they were attached to. She's a filler queen, this one, and there's more to come...
It'sAllGoneHorriblyWrong Posted April 25, 2011 Posted April 25, 2011 It seems to me that we can't begrudge a bit (alright, a lot) of filler to such a venerable kit, especially since the alternative (here) costs 3 times as much and includes lots of things (large resin pieces, vacform canopies, white metal) to put people off. Fifer54 Posted May 2, 2011 Author Posted May 2, 2011 She's been painted! Initially painted using Tamiya Acrylic Semi-gloss Black, and then coated with Klear. The first coat of Klear seemed to just pool on the surface and I thought I'd had a(nother!) disaster! But another couple of coats of Klear gave a good shine ready for decalling, and I'm about to do just that today!
Fifer54 Posted May 5, 2011 Author Posted May 5, 2011 And now she's been decalled! A coat of Klear as well, to seal the decals, you understand...
plasmahal Posted May 9, 2011 Posted May 9, 2011 Nice one, I have got to find time for me and my daughters comet racer to get finished. what did you do to the canopy?
