Doug Rogers Posted January 12, 2009 Posted January 12, 2009 (edited) Pics are a little blurry, I'll have to try and do some better ones tomorrow. Basically OOB, Eduard Q harness seatbelts, slimmed down the airfilter under the nose as much as dared, cut and repositioned the elevators. Edited January 13, 2009 by Doug Rogers
Martian Posted January 12, 2009 Posted January 12, 2009 Nice job there! I must get round to doing mine one day. Martin
Paddy Posted January 12, 2009 Posted January 12, 2009 Great shame you cant get this kit anymore while they still knock out dross like the Hawk and the Tonka !!
AnonymousA667 Posted January 12, 2009 Posted January 12, 2009 Very nice work Doug. Paddy, I guess the availability/unavailability of kits depends on actual sales? The 22/24 is listed as current, maybe there's hope that the Seafire may be resurrected some time? peebeep
Paddy Posted January 12, 2009 Posted January 12, 2009 Sorry Doug.....forgot to say well done :-)) I constantly watch e-bay but these are like gold dust. peebeep...if i remember rightly it was only ever a short issue anyway. I feel sorry for Eduard and Aires who produced etch and resin upgrades for the seafire as well as others who did wing fold detail etc just to find the kit withdrawn within the year...
Col. Posted January 12, 2009 Posted January 12, 2009 Always good to see a Seafire and this one looks lovely Been on the lookout for one of these as well, here's hoping Airfix revive the mould again soon.
Heraldcoupe Posted January 12, 2009 Posted January 12, 2009 if i remember rightly it was only ever a short issue anyway. Presumably sales were dismal. I bought my first one at full retail, then stocked up with a few more as they quickly appeared at clearance outlets in huge quantities! While I now wish I'd bought a few more, I can't blame Airfix for dropping a poor seller from their catalogue. I've no doubt it will reappear at some point, when Airfix are convinced it will sell in sufficient numbers. I've had one of these at an almost complete stage for about 10 years, the last attempt at resurrecting it ended up with a pair of wrecked radiators as I tried to straighten them! When I see them built up nicely like Dougs I realise what a nice kit it is, so maybe I ought to get back to it. Cheers, Bill.
Doug Rogers Posted January 12, 2009 Author Posted January 12, 2009 (edited) Thanks guys, forgot to say the rear canopy section was from Falcon. The kit canopy is useless and sort of perches on top of the fuselage nowhere near the canopy rails. I'm sure I saw some of these for sale the other day as I want to do the FR46 sometime, I'll have a root around and see if I can find them. Edited January 12, 2009 by Doug Rogers

Funnily enough I bought a Squadron canopy for the Mk. 22/24 kit for the very same reason. I'd certainly be interested if you do find out where they were Doug!
omegaman Posted January 12, 2009 Posted January 12, 2009 Looks great. I am building one for the naval forces build. I do have a question though: - How do you attach the wings? The fold is a little crazy and I cant see where I could mount the wings to the fuselage when folded. Thanks Anthony
Doug Rogers Posted January 12, 2009 Author Posted January 12, 2009 Looks great. I am building one for the naval forces build. I do have a question though: -How do you attach the wings? The fold is a little crazy and I cant see where I could mount the wings to the fuselage when folded. Thanks Anthony Thanks Anthony. Regarding the wing joint, if you look on the instructions, it just shows a small notch in the rear half of the wing, which if you just glued it there, would be woefully inadequate. If you look at the inserts that go into the wing recesses, the one that goes in the wing end section has a part of it with two sort of ears that fit either side of a raised part on the insert that goes in the root part of the wing. The problem is that if you fit the inserts as Airfix intend, these two parts finish off nowhere near each other. What I did, and it's still not ideal but better than nothing, was cut a couple of small notches in the top edge of the wing, so that these two ear parts not only engage in the slots but reach the part of the wing end insert that it's supposed to pivot on in real life. When the two wing halves are together, you can't see the two small slots anyway. I glued it here with CA glue, and also at the notch that Airfix intended you to glue. If you place the inner and outer inserts together, hopefully you'll see what I mean. HTH.
F-32 Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 Really nice, I have one in the stash but can't decide if the wings will be folded or not!
Heraldcoupe Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 (edited) Really nice, I have one in the stash but can't decide if the wings will be folded or not! It's an easier build with the wings folded if you're doing the Mk47. With the wings unfolded, you end up either filling gaps, or re-scribing panel lines, depending on whether you align all the pieces along the panels, or so everything butts-together nicely. I can't remember the specifics as I did mine 10 years ago, but there were panel mis-matches which made this necessary. This only affected the Mk47 wing, the Mk46 uses the same wing as the Spitfire Mk22/24 and is pretty much trouble free. Cheers, Bill. Edited January 13, 2009 by Heraldcoupe

Ptmvarsityfan Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 Lovely build and finish.Must admit I'd never noticed that strange arrester hook fairing before now, just goes to show what you can learn from modelling! Paul
