Mike Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 After a looong hiatus while I got to grips with masking & painting, I finally finished this kit tonight, depsite my old techniques coming back to haunt me on the canopy. It's not my best model ever, but looks quite striking as long as you don't have a magnifying glass with you Build thread is here if you're interested. The cockpit was a pleasant surprise, as it was painted over 2 years ago, and has been hidden by the masking tape ever since Comments & critiques welcomed as usual. 5
AnonymousFO98 Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 Looks really good Mike. that livery seems to bring out the best in the Gnat, shows off the curves nicely!
John Laidlaw Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 That's lovely as usual. It's a sweet little aircraft, and it's nice to see it in something other than Red Arrows livery... although there's nothing wrong with Red Arrows colours, of course . So, when are you going to start a build thread for the masters you've been doing, eh? .
Ian Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 Not one for swearing in public, and at the risk of getting a warning, but that is effing beautiful....... simple as that ! Ian
OzH Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 Mike, that is a beauty! Lovely clean finish Great stuff
Notdoneyet Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 Very nice indeed Mike!! Nice to see another completed Gnat, there's something so "right" about Petter's design. Now for some reason I'm reminded of those old school questions .......... If it takes a man 2 months to finish two models, how many models will he finish in a year? Ian
seanrgb Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 Thats 2 you have finished in just over a week ..are you Ill by anychance But none the less a great job all round
keefr22 Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 Another beaut Mike, that's a lovely job! Two crackers from you this month - must be Christmas??!! Great build!! Keef
AnonymousER99 Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 I still stand by my comments that I like this one beter than your Valiant Mike. The paint just looks great and now even better with a coat of flat on it. Well done indeed!! Now fire up the master machine!! Time to get back to work LOL
Mike Posted December 21, 2008 Author Posted December 21, 2008 Thanks guys Mike - it's a satin varnish
Spence Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 Hey Mike - That's great! I really love that scheme... Gorgeous! Spence
Scarlet Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 Not wanting to criticise a beautiful build, but were'nt the wings red and white? Not sure about the undersides but have a look at the photo in the link. http://www.abpic.co.uk/photo/1121553/ Please correct me if I'm wrong about your particular subject.

Many had grey wing topsides in 1969-1972 judging by my own references. Seemed to go red/white on top from at least 1973 onwards, retaining the grey underneath the wings only. E.g. http://www.abpic.co.uk/photo/1039747/ Lovely looking build.
KiwiSteve Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 Great build matey a very fetching scheme for the Gnat
pacificmustang Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 Well I DO have a magnifying glass ..and it still looks sensational to me Mike, well done for completing it after it lay dormant for so long Regards Bruce

general melchett Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 Nice to see the old gnat in all it's glory Mike , as mentioned ,striking scheme, well finished
Shaun Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 Very nice Mike. Nice to see the old trainer scheme reproduced once in while. Shaun.
Troffa Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 Love the model- super scheme as well- I (like many other Britmodellers I suspect) spent many a nervous minute on the pan at Cosford as some mad Sooty ( Propulsion trade) Sergeant taxied one at me during the aircraft marshalling phase of "airfields" If your marshalling was good he'd ignore you- if it was bad he'd follow your directions exactly!
