Hello, I'm building and IL2 in the Mud Movers Close Air Support Group Build (here), and have decided I need some paint ...

Without getting into the VVS colour arguments, AKAN seems to be the best option. Is there a UK supplier?

I could go to Linden Hill in the US, but they are on holiday

TIA

HI Robert

AFAIK, no AKAN supplier in the UK.

I am guessing you are asking about acylic?

Anyway, i got some a Ukraine internet shop, Armory.

I have ordered a couple of times with no problem, they are cheap, even with post. BUT, lots of items they list are on backorder, including most of the AKAN acrylic paint. [never looked at the thinner based] though I think they put together ordres once it's ordered...

AKAN page here http://armory.in.ua/index.php?cPath=41_259

There are other East Euro places that would stock this.

FWIW, I think the colours are probably reasonably easy to find or mix matches for.

Are you aware the Soviet Warplanes site has a list of paint matches for Humbrol?

Also, if you have not seen it, in the WIP section Dr.Jellyfingers has been doing an Il-2,

some useful info on colours and details of the Il-2

He made up some mixes that got Learstang's approval from the pics

Just a quick update on the painting. I've used Humbrol enamels as usual but added to get the colours 'ish' right after Jason and Troys initial advise.

The green is Hum 150 with a bit of 155 in, the brown is a 50/50-ish mix of 187 & 29 with a drop of white and the grey is a 50/50-ish mix of 79 & 33.

Not sure if he lists the blue mix,

There is also Adrian MF tour de force of accurising the Airfix Il-2,

Lots of interesting and skilled work in both, so make yourself a cuppa, sit down, relax and and be inspired. Armchair modelling at it's best!

Thanks Troy

That link to post 122 (http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?s=&showtopic=234916467&view=findpost&p=1047047) will be a great help

The underside blue I can get by following your link to Mig3 Sovietwarplanes and then http://mig3.sovietwarplanes.com/colors/hum...light-blues.htm - AMT 7 looks like humbrol 89 + a drop of 47

The interior colours look like a nightmare - at the moment I'm favouring a mix of Ocean Grey and Light Aircraft Grey + some blue (maybe Hellblau, maybe Azure or PRU blue). From some of the walk-rounds I've seen, the colour looks dark grey inside wheel wells, but either fades to a light blue, or reflects light blue in stronger light ... with a green tinge - maybe.

I ordered a bunch from Linden Hill and had a very positive experience. I'm sure they will return eventually!
Sorry, I was being literal when I said they are on holiday - their web site says they'll be back on 24th July

Without getting into the VVS colour arguments

I hope I'm not perpetuating those arguments by getting involved here - just hoping to share my experience, and to apply a bit of common sense...

As I see it, you have three options:

(1) Easy - order the Akan paint and use that.

(2) Hard - use paint formulas based on recommendations from wherever - personally I don't enjoy mixing paint, but maybe I'm just lazy...

(3) (And therefore...) Easiest - based on my eyeballing of actual samples of both Akan acrylics and Humbrol enamels, I suggest the following:

- Underside colour AMT-7: Humbrol 89; very slightly lighter than Akan AMT-7 but so close it's hardly worth adjusting

- Interior colour A-14: Humbrol 140; again, very, very close to the Akan acrylic A-14. No nightmares required.

As far as walkarounds go, well, as colour references, restored airframes are only as accurate as the restorers care to try to make them. You might be better off looking at some of the threads in the Colours, Schemes, and Research subforum on Massimo Tessitori's site for images of original, unaltered aircraft parts (wreckage), especially with regard to A-14:

I am working with AKAN paints too. I found stock from this site: www.hobbycolours.com
Supplying Greek modellers but I am sure they can send orders to EU countries as well.
