speedy Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 (edited) Just finished this one. Picked up for £18 from Antics at the Weston Super Mare show this year. I fancied this after my Mil-8 build which was a slog. The kit is built fairly out of the box; I did some research here and noted other commets that the canopy was wrong, the fairing around the exhaust was wrong etc.... In my search for reference material i found in a photo in a magazine and one on airliners.net of a SF with a canopy cover - ta da, so now i knew what i was going to do. The kit went together very well with only a tiny bit of filler around the topside of the wing/body join. I corrected the fairing around the exhaust (never noticed it until it was pointed out!). I cut out the foot rest below the cockpit and cut and lowered the elevators and trim tabs. The kit primed and a first for me i pre-shaded. The base colour of Sky was applied and then the DSG. The shading really stood out under the sky and it worked well on this kit. I wanted to fold the wings, so added some piping and busied it up a little. The wing lights were drilled out from the rear and i dropped colour into that hole (really quite effective). Decals applied (which were the kit version) and they were terrible. They felt almost plastic like?, but they did go down fine. Then the weathering, i was aware not to add too much and the exhaust staining seems to be at the bottom most exhaust, compared to the top which is relatively cleanish. Added the lights under the wing and the RBF tags. Canopy cover was added (tissue & water/PVA mix) and the tie downs added (stretched sprue), again using sprue for the spine antenna. Wheels ironed and painted red dots on the guns (airliners.net reference) that was it. Really quite please with this and it looks good. I was thinking about putting it on a base with a resessed floor, to give the impression its being lowered but we'll see.... comments or critisims please.............. perry Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 No criticisms here, probably one of the nicest 1/48 Seafurys I've seen
Notdoneyet Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 Speedy, That's a lovely Sea Fury! I love the canopy cover Ian
Stonar Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 (edited) Really nice Fury, one of my favourite aircraft. Nice to see the ailerons correctly positioned for folded wings! Below is a picture taken by my dad from his 'plane showing the exhaust staining on other aircraft of 801 Sqdn. As you say it mainly emanates from the lower exhausts. http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp202/r...n/801Norway.jpg Cheers Steve Edited May 1, 2009 by Stonar
OzH Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 I have to agree, that is lovely As above, the wings folded correctly make a real difference as well, attention to detail, nice...
bigbadbadge Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 Nice build, like the idea for the canopy cover. Awesome looking plane the Sea fury. All the best Chris
Stonar Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 Hi again Speedy "I cut out the foot rest below the cockpit" This sounds really churlish and nit-picking about such a lovely model but I think the foot rest opened with the canopy. I really hope I'm wrong! Cheers Steve

Stonar Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 "Really - ah crap. I though it was opened when the undercariage was lowered." You are quite correct. Please accept my apology,I should have checked photos on this very computer before opening my big mouth Congratulations again on a great build. Cheers Steve
mikeew Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 Brilliant job Speedy, i like the canopy cover, really neat touch! You are right, it needs a base to set it off with the canopy cover and the wings all folded with the rbf tags etc
KLP Publishing Posted May 2, 2009 Posted May 2, 2009 Great looking Sea Fury! I love the canopy cover too. I've seen it done in 1/32 scale to hide the abomination that is the cockpit of the Hobbycraft Sea Fury. Can you explain what's involved in the tissue and PVA/water technique for reproducing it? Kev

Tissue paper, PVA/water mix and paint away. When its dried trim to what you want..........
smuts Posted May 2, 2009 Posted May 2, 2009 Beautiful Fury, definitely one of the best I've seen. Andy.
Guest snipersmudge Posted May 2, 2009 Posted May 2, 2009 cracking model spedy, love the paint job you can really see the lines of rivets and the shading. will it be making an appearance on tuesday?

I assumed you'd have to soak it in the mix and then apply it to the model. Now, to clarify one more thing: this tissue paper is not the same as ordinary household tissues? I'm assuming not... Kev
TRUSKY1965 Posted May 2, 2009 Posted May 2, 2009 It's a really beauty. I´m learning a lot with your work!. Thank you so much. Greetings. TRUSKY1965.

I'm assuming not...Kev Just the normal (cheapest) tissue you can get. The stuff you blow your nose with (Kleenex etc....). Cut the rough amount you want. Place it on the model. Paint brush the PVA/water mix. Let it dry (be patient - i normally let it dry over night). Trim with a sharp blade. Paint to what colour you want. If your covering a big gap perhaps put foil underneath, so the wet tissue doesn't fall in..... Edited May 2, 2009 by speedy
Karl Posted May 2, 2009 Posted May 2, 2009 That is very smart - a really nice job you've done there. Karl
Alan P Posted May 2, 2009 Posted May 2, 2009 BEAUTIFUL model Speedy! The canopy cover looks perfect, i've never been able to replicate this technique convincingly. Not a prophead, but i really like this one! Al
buccymad Posted May 4, 2009 Posted May 4, 2009 when i did mine i was torn between a clean build ,or to weather it as it would have been during its operational life http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.p...amp;hl=sea+fury wish i had did the same as you exellent build
