Jon Kunac-Tabinor Posted December 5, 2009 Posted December 5, 2009 (edited) Hi all. Here's the Hobbycraft 1/48th Bearcat with a 'few' improvements added. See here for what I've done http://www.britmodel...showtopic=37214 Decals are from Berna and represent a GC1/9 Limousin "Beercat" based at Cat-Bi, French Indochina 1951. Camera batteries have just died, so I'll add a few more pics once they are recharged! As always, all comments welcome. Hope you like her. Salut Jonners [edit 6th Dec] Took some pics - hopefully you can get an idea of the finish with these. Edited October 8, 2012 by Jon Kunac-Tabinor
Smiffy Posted December 5, 2009 Posted December 5, 2009 (edited) Cor!...I like that, a lot. I bet you're pleased with it, too. Superb. Edited December 5, 2009 by Smiffy
Maxidad Posted December 5, 2009 Posted December 5, 2009 Looks like that one's been stuck in the steaming jungles of Camdodia for a while - nice one!
Mike Posted December 5, 2009 Posted December 5, 2009 Looks buggered, doesn't it? I think I'd like to see this in the flesh at some point... I suspect it's really good, although I'm having trouble seeing the detail on the overall shots
dahut Posted December 5, 2009 Posted December 5, 2009 It looks dirty and beat up, like it should. You've done a great job on 'er.
AnonymousFY21 Posted December 5, 2009 Posted December 5, 2009 Top notch finish there Jon, most impressed. rich
Matt Roberts Posted December 5, 2009 Posted December 5, 2009 Great looking weathered GSB there Jon. What colors did you use for that other than GSB? I'm just thinking ahead to when I will probably do another Bearcat in a year or so when Hobbyboss gets thiers out. My previous attempt got the fade on the GSB but I couldn't get the 'dirty' look to it to my satisfaction. It also may help out those of us doing Korean airframes, though maybe not as dirty! Great looking build Matt
keefr22 Posted December 5, 2009 Posted December 5, 2009 (edited) The final varnish coat does seem to have really pulled it all together now Jon, & your very neat fading of the national markings has also helped unify that really well weathered finish. I really do like her now, but I'm still undecided whether all that work with the maskol paid major benefits? Whatever, I bet your pleased with it, as it has turned out a little cracker! Very nice job! Keef Edit: spelling Edited December 5, 2009 by keefr22

Keef Edit: spelling Hi Keef - all i can say about the maskol idea is that is does leave a very fine patchy variegated patina, but its subtle ( especially after all the other weathering effects). I'm putting it down to experience, and an experiment which kinda, sorta, and other non-sequiters ending in 'a' worked. Funnily enough, I'm not as pleased as I hoped I'd be. The amount of effort put in to this build leaves me with a sense of satisfaction, rather than elation. I like the result, but its made me realise I can step another notch for the next build. Per Ardua ad Plastra I guess cheers for all the comments though. Jonners
Buzby061 Posted December 5, 2009 Posted December 5, 2009 Cracking build Jon. Looks as knackered & weary as the ones I've seen in photographs, you've really captured it well. Pete
turnerdad Posted December 5, 2009 Posted December 5, 2009 Looks great. I like the weathering, in keeping with it's life.
Fifer54 Posted December 5, 2009 Posted December 5, 2009 Impressive! That weathering makes it gorgeously tatty-looking!
dmpanther Posted December 5, 2009 Posted December 5, 2009 Very nice Jonners Now to finish my FAA Bearcat......Maybe in time for KUTA 111 Darren
Jon Kunac-Tabinor Posted December 6, 2009 Author Posted December 6, 2009 Looks buggered, doesn't it? I think I'd like to see this in the flesh at some point... I suspect it's really good, although I'm having trouble seeing the detail on the overall shots Hi Mike - cheers matey - I've added some more pics to the first post - so hopefully they will show things off a little more. Thanks for all the comments Jonners
David H Posted December 6, 2009 Posted December 6, 2009 Beautiful looking "Beercat" Jonners, i too admit to being skeptical about the end results you were going to attain with that technique, but i think the photos speak for themselves. I think the model looks beautiful. Well Done! All the Best, david
Arie Posted December 7, 2009 Posted December 7, 2009 She really captures the ambiance of war in Indochina, almost as if she flew to life from an old grainy photo. You should be right proud to park her on the shelf!
Dave100TR Posted December 7, 2009 Posted December 7, 2009 Excellent! Love the weathering. I don't follow the comment about the Maskol - what did you do with it? I assume that was how you got the chipping to bare metal - correct? Anyway - great job. I'm toying with the idea of the Trumpeter 1/32 kit so this has spurred me on. Unfortunately I don't know if there are 1/32 French decals out there. Does anyone know? Dave
keefr22 Posted December 7, 2009 Posted December 7, 2009 I don't follow the comment about the Maskol - what did you do with it? Dave, have a look at Jonners build thread. He links to it in the first post. Keef
