Bobski Posted February 28, 2010 Posted February 28, 2010 (edited) Well I've started on Revell's big Tiffie. It's my first 1/32nd scale jet and hopefully it will look half decent when I've finished it! It's mostly going to be OOB, although I'm going to add some of TwoMikes' resin goodies to it as well as some TwoBobs decals for the XI Sqn CO's jet, some Flightpath Paveways and a resin LITENING III LDP on the centreline. As has been said before, this is a pretty good kit, although it does has its flaws and its weaknesses. Still, for the price I'm not going to complain, I'm going to get stuck in! So far I've built the seat, which really is a work of art (once you remove the crappy moulded belts anyway) and I've painted the cockpit tub using photos dug up from work and from the Internet as a reference: Cockpit tub: Instrument panel: There's a bit of touching up to do in a couple of places and a bit of weathering to do, but so far I'm quite pleased. Daniel Posted February 28, 2010 Posted February 28, 2010 Good luck, I've never built a 1/32 either but I think you've got yourself the best there is to start with. Dan
Mike Posted February 28, 2010 Posted February 28, 2010 Although a lot of people look on this kit as a "missed opportunity", I rather like it. The cockpit isn't its strong point, and the intakes are 'orrible too, but with effort (that stuff that makes the hobby a bit of a challenge from time to time), you can build a pretty good likeness of a Tiffie. Keep up the good work Bobski!
Iain Ogilvie Posted February 28, 2010 Posted February 28, 2010 Will be starting one soon so will be watching closely! Great start Bobski Iain
Bobski Posted March 12, 2010 Author Posted March 12, 2010 I've been away for a week, but I decided to take some plastic card with me and have a go at some scratchbuilding. The result? See for yourself: In case anyone is wondering, it's the centreline pylon for the LITENING III LDP. It's only my second attempt at scratchbuilding and it isn't quite finished yet, but I'm reasonably happy with it so far. Now I'm home from my course I should be able to get stuck into the kit again!
Mark M Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 im looking forward to your build, i have one to start after my 1/48 one and i hope to leearn from you and SIG!!
Bobski Posted March 15, 2010 Author Posted March 15, 2010 A bit more work done tonight. The cockpit is now completed and merely awaits a quick dusting of chalk to weather it down a touch before being installed in the fuselage.
daz greenwood Posted March 16, 2010 Posted March 16, 2010 Looking good Bob! I can't wait to see more!
Bobski Posted March 17, 2010 Author Posted March 17, 2010 Thanks for all the comments so far. In the last couple of days I have ordered a full set of Paveways from Flightpath and an Isracast LITENING pod. I'm also looking at some Eduard belts for the seat - hopefully the set for the Revell kit will be released soon!
HOUSTON Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 cockpit is looking pretty good... Keep up the good work. Back for more ...
albe60 Posted March 21, 2010 Posted March 21, 2010 Hello Bob, you're using a brush or airbrush? How do you deal with the cockpit .... drybrush washes or oil? You did a great job with the pylon. Good luck for your model.
Bobski Posted March 21, 2010 Author Posted March 21, 2010 Hello Bob,you're using a brush or airbrush? How do you deal with the cockpit .... drybrush washes or oil? You did a great job with the pylon. Good luck for your model. Hi I use an airbrush for the main aircraft colour and the weapons, but for the cockpit I used a brush. All the switches and panels are hand-painted with a 10/0 brush - no dry-brushing for me as I can't get the hang of it. There's a slight wash with Promodeller's dark brown, but it didn't come out so well so I'm going to give it a very light dusting with some pastel chalks before it's put into the fuselage. Thanks for the comment on the pylon. There's still a little bit of work to do on it, like scribing the detail, but it's mostly done now.
Bobski Posted April 7, 2010 Author Posted April 7, 2010 Not much to report lately as I'm waiting on a parcel of resin bits from TwoMikes, however I did get a delivery from Dave Parkins at Flightpath the other day: These really are a work of art, but definitely not for the faint hearted as there is a lot of detail and some of it can be a tad fiddly. I decided to build one up to see what it was like - an hour and a half later and this is the result: One down, three to go!
silverburn Posted April 8, 2010 Posted April 8, 2010 Just 4??? Try 6... http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.p...1086&st=180 Remember to "rotate" your LITENING for a UK version!
Fifer54 Posted April 8, 2010 Posted April 8, 2010 Looking good, Bobski! Lots of skilled work gone into that, but when I saw the thread title, I thought you were building Revell's old 1/32 Hawker Typhoon!

Already done, but thanks for the reminder I did consider the six-bomb fit, but decided I wanted to have a pair of gas bags on there too.
Bobski Posted April 8, 2010 Author Posted April 8, 2010 RobertPackage part deux is in the mail!! Cracking, thanks Mike. I'll let you know when it arrives and also when I've shot the mail people at work!
Bobski Posted June 5, 2010 Author Posted June 5, 2010 (edited) An update at last! Apologies if the photos are a bit poor - I'm still getting the hang of the camera on my phone (batteries are dead in my real camera!) Sorry it's been a bit quiet lately - I've been waiting for some resin bits to arrive from TwoMikes and today they finally got here! The delay was nothing to do with Mike and the service I've got from him has been superb. The service we've both had from the UK and US postal services, on the other hand, leaves much to be desired (these arrived after Mike's third attempt to send them!) I decided to dive straight in and have added the APU exhaust. This really is a superb piece of casting. The exhaust itself is commendably thin and the way it fits so snugly to the fuselage shows just how well it has been both mastered and casted. I'd highly recommend these for anyone building a Revell Tiffie, it really brings the model to life. Only other update so far is I've decided to "go to town" on this kit. First step is to open up the access panel for the Maintenance Data Panel (MDP): I'm going to scratchbuild the MDP itself and add it later in the build. Edited June 5, 2010 by Bobski
Bobski Posted June 6, 2010 Author Posted June 6, 2010 Another quick update. I've been detailing the main landing gear bays to try and represent some of the wiring and piping that is in there. It's the first time I've tried to do this and I've not added all of the wiring, so it's not perfect, but with a bit of paint it should look OK.
Bobski Posted June 6, 2010 Author Posted June 6, 2010 Yet another update. I've assembled the fuselage. The next stage will be to add a few more details before adding the wings and the fin. To compare sizes, here's a shot of the fuselage with a 1/48th scale Saudi Tiff I did a couple of years ago for Scale Model World:
albe60 Posted June 6, 2010 Posted June 6, 2010 Very nice work Bobski. I'm happy to see you at work on Typhoon. Could you tell me if the intake air is composed like a 1/48 kit or if the assembly is different ? What do you think about ? Bye Alberto

Bye Alberto The intake is built up much the same as the 1/48th scale kit and, if I'm honest, is very poor. Intake blanks are essential because in this scale what Revell give you is really unsatisfactory. The intakes and intake trunking are the only part of the Trumpeter kit that are better than Revell's kit.
