Hi all, sorry if this is insultingly basic- my references are limited and/or buried. Supposedly only the first 15 Meteor Mk.3s (wartime production) had the same engine as the Mk.1. So the question is, what external change happened with the postwar or "standard" Mk.3's new engine?

Hiya Bob

Shortened tail pipes and some small external fairings on the nacelles. The Meteors that saw limited action in the last weeks of the war had the later (Derwent) engines.

Hi,

The Mk3 also had the speed brakes notoriously fitted to the Tamiya Mk1 which shouldn't have these.

BTW Both options are possible from the Dragon Meteor III kits although the instructions don't mention the fact. The nacelle outlets (NB outlets, not intakes) are provided together with flashed-over locating holes for them on the nacelles, and the inner tailpipes look fine if you leave the projecting tailpipe bits off.

Thanks Chris, now I know what I'm looking for, anyway! I had assumed that it was the "first fifteen" that saw action, so good to have that assumption fixed. Good information about the Dragon kit, but I'm in 1/48 land. I knew about the airbrakes, and I've had examples of the Mk.1 with both versions of the wing.

From various sources (none of which I have with me at the mo, but mainly Chris Shores' 2 TAF series) I think the 616 Sq story is:

anti-V-1 operations over UK: F.1s

detachment of 4 aircraft to continent for affiliation duties but no action (the famous white-painted aircraft): F.3s with early engines.

ground-attack in closing stages of the war: F.3s with later engines.

I know, I should have done my homework! And for those misguided souls like me who like models big enough to see :nerd:

From Tom Cleaver's build of the Mk.3: "parts F-10 and F-11 on the engine sprues provide shorter exhaust and the oil cooler vent - which are the two visual identifiers for the late production F.3."

In my defense, the couple of books I have that are specifically about the Meteor are not terribly helpful when it comes to understanding the finer points of evolution.

Thanks again everybody,

Gentlemen! What from itself represent these mysterious parts F-10 and F-11  ?

Looked the instruction from Tamiya here:

Do not see I there details parts F-10 and F-11  !!

Aardvark, I don't think the instructions mention the parts, according to Tom (assuming I remember what I read correctly). I'll have to dig out one of my kits to have a look...

Edit: Which I've just done. Yes, the parts are there indeed. Gee, that makes for an easy conversion!
