delta7 Posted August 5, 2011 Posted August 5, 2011 (edited) A while ago I made a trimaster 1/48 190 dora however I was never happy with the paint job, especialy on the wings so when I picked up another one I decided to redo the old one at the same time progress so far the parts came away easily and after 24hrs soaked in modelstrip The kit comes with metal parts and photoetch so all I will need to add are some decals I picked up an aeromaster set to use on the last one but didnt use them so one will be a JV44 flown by huptman Waldemar Wubke and one will be II/ JG 54 as flown by Gefr. Werner Merz For reference I have the superlative Green Hearts: First in Combat with the Dora 9. which my wife kindly bought me for my 50th The only thing I am lacking is the jv44 squadron badge decal which isnt on my sheets so if anyone has one spare Id be grateful Edited September 29, 2011 by delta7
delta7 Posted August 26, 2011 Author Posted August 26, 2011 (edited) YAAH kids back to school and so Iv some spare time again A quick update- all parts were cleaned, I rescribed the lines on the one I stripped, and I have reassembled the origonal and made up the new one This is a nice kit and the parts fit well, all it took was a little piece of spare spruce inserted at the rear of the pit to spread out the fuselague and it was a snap tight fir of wings to fuselage some photos- subassemblies pit I made up some homebuilt seatbelts using wine bottle foil and spares from etch but cant see anything anyway waiting for glue to dry then filling, sanding and undercoat Edited August 26, 2011 by delta7
jacksdad Posted August 26, 2011 Posted August 26, 2011 Can't wait to see these done. Are you masking the white stripes? Steve
delta7 Posted August 26, 2011 Author Posted August 26, 2011 Yes I plan to mask the stripes, I have a cunning plan, the kit has white decals for the stripes so I plan to cut these out ( still on the backing paper) and use these as masks
Parabat Posted August 26, 2011 Posted August 26, 2011 Had no idea you could do this to a kit! I will be watching this with interest... Nice idea, can't wait to see the end result!
delta7 Posted August 27, 2011 Author Posted August 27, 2011 @ Parabat, this is the third kit Iv stripped and repainted, my early attempts were pretty poor, brush strokes and ridges etc. Its the first one Iv deconstructed , it came apart pretty easily, but I only used revell contacta and superglue, if I had used liquid cement then I dont think it would have been possible. Its really all practice for a HAR seaking I picked up that was part built and I want to do a bit of work to refurbish, better practicing on this than ruining a more expensive kit and folk here have shown that you should just try things and do what makes you happy with your kits.

delta7 Posted August 27, 2011 Author Posted August 27, 2011 In truth errrr nope , but I have cut out paper masks before for camo patterns and this worked well. The beauty of what I want to try is , I hope, that as the lines were hand painted on the real aircraft and must have been crude - therefore I dont need perfect lines for authenticity, but we will see how it turns out and thats halve the fun
tinleeds Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 (edited) I will be watching this with interest! Couse I'll start my one from Italery (ex Dragon, ex Trimaster) next week. Good luck to you mate! Edited August 29, 2011 by tinleeds
delta7 Posted September 18, 2011 Author Posted September 18, 2011 (edited) well things are progressing but not smoothly. I decided on reflection to go with plan B and mask the stripes, so I sprayed the bottom appliance white, masked then sprayed the red with my airbrush - now I havnt really got much practice with this and the results were a bit dissapointing. The red came out a bit orange peel and the masking tape was a POS and allowed the red to bleed under it. note to self - ALWAYS use Tamiya tape @NEVER EVER go for a cheap substitute again !!!!! One good thing was at least I got the spray paint to flow - added 2 drops of fairy liquid to the mix and it worked well, previous I had all sorts of problems with paint clogging up. Some more practice with pressure and distance and I might get round to retiring the hairy sticks but not yet, I still prefer them. anyway after this I hand painted over the worst of the red bleed and sandided it all over with 2000 grit and it looks better now I brush painted the top camo, the mottling is done by a sponge giving us this wheels and undercarraige next Edited September 18, 2011 by delta7
Parabat Posted September 18, 2011 Posted September 18, 2011 Looking good, masking was something I found challenging with my builds. Tiny bleeds are so annoying! Shame about the 'orange' peel, but I like your method to rectify it.
delta7 Posted September 21, 2011 Author Posted September 21, 2011 up on their feet, attempt 2 as I didnt get the angles right first time canopies next then varnish and decallling
delta7 Posted September 25, 2011 Author Posted September 25, 2011 nearly there a light wash then a matt coat to do
Parabat Posted September 25, 2011 Posted September 25, 2011 Cracking stuff, I've really enjoyed seeing your Dora being resurrected, really good to see. What paints did you use?
delta7 Posted September 25, 2011 Author Posted September 25, 2011 Cracking stuff, I've really enjoyed seeing your Dora being resurrected, really good to see. What paints did you use? Thank you The paints are a mix of Tamiya and xtracrylix.. They are both diluted aprox 50/50 with their own brand thinners. I prefer the xtracrylix, they seem to spray better and even brush nicely. delta7
delta7 Posted September 29, 2011 Author Posted September 29, 2011 Finished - Im pretty happy with these
