Gundylunch Posted July 11, 2011 Posted July 11, 2011 (edited) Managed to capture some of the incident...............Copyright strictly mine please. Apologies for the large files................ Edited July 11, 2011 by Gundylunch
Gundylunch Posted July 11, 2011 Author Posted July 11, 2011 nice photos shame about the subject Must admit to BBD being a particular favourite of mine, never thought I'd capture her like this, I'll post some pictures of her in a happier mode sooner or later..................
Andrew Jones Posted July 11, 2011 Posted July 11, 2011 Appears to be little or no damage to BBD, yet the Skyraider has lost several feet off one wing, remarkable how the pilot recovered and managed to land. A small miracle no-one was hurt.
turnerdad Posted July 11, 2011 Posted July 11, 2011 Incredible photos. The Mustang doesn't on the face of it look too badly damaged, but clearly a sizeable chunk taken out of the fuselage, and obviously the control cables for the rudder and tailplanes would run through the area.

Have a look at the fifth shot just as Rob's brolly is opening, there's a big cut through the fuselage just behind the rad flap. It's just about where the aft bulkhead is that has the control cable pulleys and guides on it. No wonder Rob got over the side rapidly.

tonyot Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 Amazing photos, if the Mustang pilot sees that last photo he will be having even worse nightmares about the incident!! He did so well getting out in time and pulling his ripcord and must be a very cool customer. Cheers for sharing these, have you sent copies to Duxford or The Fighter Collection for the AIB to use? FalkeEins Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 (edited) He did so well getting out in time and pulling his ripcord and must be a very cool customer. Rob Davies ..of Woodchurch, nr Ashford, Kent ...and former owner of this aircraft. I believe he sold it to a German company only a few months ago.....one less thing to worry about I guess Edited July 12, 2011 by FalkeEins
Bobs_Buckles Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 What time did this happen? I left the field opposite the runway around 4.35 pm on Sunday. From where I was sitting I didn't see or hear anything. Cheers, Bob
Seamus Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 The collision occurred just after 5 o'clock during their final run and break. The incident can be viewed . Incredible reactions from Rob to jettison the canopy and bail out so quickly, must have had a million things running through his mind. The Skyraider pilot did a great job of recovering from the roll too. Great skill shown by both pilots.
Max Headroom Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 Amazing pics. Sad loss to the warbird movement but most importantly the pilot is ok. Have you considered submitting the photos to the AAIB? Trevor
FalkeEins Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 Great skill shown by both pilots. RD interviewed on tonight's BBC South East today news programme " ..it was an extremely loud impact .. I heard it even above the noise of the engine and the head-set.....the aircraft was violently thrown onto its side. At this point professionalism just kicks in....even when it's to save your life in this instance...normally if there's a problem you wouldn't bale out out below 1,000 feet..it was just an unfortunate error of judgement .."
Mikey58 Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 Amazing video! Can't believe the Mustang pilot got out so quick and survived from the low altitude. On the face of it,that seems a big misjudgement by the Skyraider pilot!I was there on the day and one of the Skyraiders had to pull up sharp from a pass to avoid a Spitfire on finals (MH434 I think).A busy flying schedule, seemed slightly chaotic at times but I guess everyone knew what they were doing. Mike
davidelvy Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 Goodness, that parachute hardly had time to bang open! I wonder if he packs his own?
