Navy Bird Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 (edited) Here are some shots of the Revell Fairey Gannet AS.1 model that I've just completed. The Work In Progress thread can be found at: Fairey Gannet Work In Progress I posed the Gannet on an old Verlinden cardboard carrier deck: Enjoy! David H Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 Wow Bill, that is a splendid rendition of one of the ugliest aeroplanes i've ever seen!! I've seen several of these Revell kits built up so far, but you've really done the kit justice. Well Done! Regards, david
Mikey58 Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 That is so well done-even more so being that scale, lovely work!! Mike
raif Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 simply excellent, I love the Gannet myself and this is beautifully done!
Davec_24 Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 Wow, that's a lovely Gannet! I agree with you that the Gannet isn't an ugly aeroplane. especially in its ASW/ECM variant. I love the tail shape, I think that adds a look of elegance to the plane. I've got the Trumpeter one knocking around somewhere, must get that out at some point. Is it just me, or are the fairings over the flap actuators too large and too square on the Revell kit? Not meaning to destract at all from what is one of the best Gannets I have seen built.
p-26luvr Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 I agree with everything that has been said about your model so far. I have started my model & yours is an inspiration to me. Thanks for posting so many pictures. Carl T
Navy Bird Posted March 20, 2011 Author Posted March 20, 2011 Hi Great work Where did you get the deck? F I bought the carrier deck from one of the vendors at a model contest staged by the Rochester, NY Historical Scale Model Association (HSMA). I'm thinking that it was around $5 - but it was probably about 15-20 years ago. The only identifying mark on the package is Verlinden Productions #36. I have no idea whether this is still available or not. It would look even nicer with some 1/72 scale deck crew and equipment. Cheers, Bill

Judging from the references I've looked at on the web (mostly walk-around pictures at Prime Portal), the fairings on the Revell kit are the right size, but more squared off than on the real thing. For example (from an AEW variant): Cheers, Bill Edited July 6, 2017 by Navy Bird Removed Photobucket links
Davec_24 Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 @ Bill: That makes sense, thought they just somehow looked a little too pronounced. It's good to see that they really do have a big gap where the control surface hinges are, such that the effect you get by having them poseable is not actually too far from the real deal.
Glen T Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 always been a fan of the Gannet and that is a stunning build. Glen.
ChancerUK Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 Realy nice work there, built one a couple of years ago and its a lovely kit, you've definately done it justice.
Morpheus Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 I love the Gannet. Butt ugly, practical, gets the job done. Quintessentially British. Very nice job. Hard to believe it is 1/72.
