Hi all,

My 1/32 Whirlwind patterns are stalled trying to nut out some details. Main areas needing clarification is the line of the trailing edge of the flap. All plans indicate it runs parallel with the upper trailing edge, but I am inclined to think only on the outer section, and the inner section continues in this angled line, so it is not parallel with the upper inner section. Hard to explain but adding all the info together this seems the answer to the unresolved issue. Any one have any clarification (and I dont mean reference to 4+, Cooper, Classic etc) ?

Next is the fuel tanks. They are raised slighly from the wing surface, but what are the details of the (Raised?) ribs. Kits do have them raised but this does not make it so. Does anyone have a clear photo or maintenance manual picture to confirm exactly how the "ribs" look.

Plenty more for later but this will allow me to finish the outer patterns.

Thanks...............

Have you seen the book "Whirlwind" subtitled "The Westland Whirlwind Fighter" - and I mean book, hardback, over 150 pages - by Victor Bingham, published by Airlife ? This has a lot of the sort of information you want with text and diagrams and photos.

Looking on Amazon/Abebooks there are secondhand copies around but quite expensive - maybe you can get one via your local library ?

Might also be worth trying Westland themselves ?

Hi Greg,

Interesting!

Sorry, but I have only got 4+ and Profile to go on. However, there is a good picture of L6845 on p.15 of 4+ showing the Fowler flap in full deflection. Now if you get your eye right down to page level looking from the side along the line of the flap's trailing edge I would say this is a straight line and if it was to follow the change of angle at the nacelle you would notice this change I'm sure.

However, because the flap shows no significant taper I would rather suggest that it follows the line of the inboard section. In this way the wing overlap would taper to nothing outboard of the nacelle. I rather suggest it would be this arrangement.

I can't really say much as regards the fuel tank 'ribs', except that the large photo in the centre of 4+ clearly shows light reflection on these ribs suggesting they stand proud to some extent. It is the undersurface, I know, but I would suggest the same arrangement is on the uppersurface.

Having got a bit worked up over the 1/72 version I am interested in what you are planning!

Cheers
