ReccePhreak Posted July 2, 2009 Posted July 2, 2009 A friend told me he saw a picture recently of a Terma AIRCM (Advanced IR Countermeasures) Pod, being carried by a Tornado GR4. Apparently Terma modified a BOZ pod, to carry the IR flare launchers. I tried to do a Google search, but came up empty. There was also nothing on the Terma website. Does anybody have any info, and hopefully pics, of this pod? Larry

Thanks for that link. I missed that, when I went to Terma's website. Along with the pod in question, there are some other cool countermeasure systems illustrated. I love putting lots of bumps & stuff on my planes. Cheers, Larry

Cheers, Larry Totally agree, that F-16 pylon looks the biz. Terma have done a great job, I became aware of them when they did the pods for the Dutch apaches that deployed to Afghanistan- the whole system was designed, trialled and fitted in a ridiculously short period of time ( a matter of months) and was ideally suited to the threat. Its interface with the existing airframe and avionics is extremely elegant. I also believe that their pods will be turning up on Nimrod and Hercules in the not too distant future...

In the issue of "Air Forces Monthly" that's just come out, maybe? Nick
Andrew Posted July 2, 2009 Posted July 2, 2009 Larry, good question well asked and Troffa, my thanks also for your answer. I now know what the BAe GR.4 prototype, ZG773, is carrying in this thread (photos 10-12) and others on UKAR that I've seen recently. I agree with you Larry about hanging things from pylons; it's got to be done and this is something new....... Will it make it into squadron service for Tornados or is it for Typhoons I wonder? Cheers, Andrew.

Troffa, I agree that Terma appears to be doing some pretty cool (and effective) stuff with add-on countermeasure systems. I wouldn't be surprised to see their equipment turning up on a LOT of current aircraft. Cheers, Andrew. Andrew, Thanks for your comments. I feel that much of the future "add-on" countermeasures will more likely be hung from pylons (like the AIRCM pod), instead of scabbed on (like the different ALE-40 systems), for the simple reason that they can do it quicker, and with less internal airframe modifications (including extensive rewiring). Cheers, Larry

spike7451 Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 The is a current shortage of Skyshadow pods which is why you sometimes see a dummy BOZ pod on that station, plus both Boz & Skyshadow are over 25 years old!
Bobski Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 Go onto UKAR and search for "Warton" under Modern Military Photography. You should find some photos of our Tornados carrying the AIRCM pod.
AndyPeacock Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 I think these are being procured for the GR4s that are off to Afghanistan. I think the idea is to provide a greater/automated defence against ManPads. I think they might be coming in under a UOR. Andy

How come? Surely we've got a lot fewer Tornado GRs nowadays in service so you'd think MUs would be full of the things. Or were there never enough to go round? Nick

Thanks for that info. I completely forgot to check that forum. I found a lot of pics taken by different people that look the same (taken from the same location?), but there were a few newer ones, showing more details of the underside & rear of the pod. Cheers, Larry

They aren't close up, but you can usually find some good ones of the stuff we have flying around on there. Believe it or not, it's often how I know what's been flying as I'm stuck in the office for most of the day (although I do hear everything).
