Phil Reeder Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 Every so often,a kit comes along, that gets you thinking"How can this be bettered?".The 350th Dragon kit of the Buchanan is one of them. The mouldings are crisp and sharp, and everything is provided(apart from deck-railing)to complete a highly accurate model of a lesser-known US destroyer. Two frets of PE are included, along with a comprehensive camouflage plan, making painting a little easier. As I started to build this kit,I was astounded by the fit of the parts, they went together with a precision that other companies should try to copy. The main deck parts mated with the hull perfectly ,with virtually no join. It is rumoured that Dragon are planning an Independence class CVL in the near furture,if so, ROLL ON! Now back to the build,I made and painted the hull in Measure 12(mod),and after a coat of kleer, added the walk-way decals and hull numbers.A start has been made on the main deck-houses,all with the same high standard of fit. Bye Phil
Derwentsider Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 Blimey, you don`t mess about Phil.Nice work so far. From what I can see of the instructions there seem to be some tiny figures included as well!
turnerdad Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 This kit might be my first Naval build by the sound of the kit, though I'd prefer an RN subject, but it looks very nice. Off to Milton Keynes on Sun with some pocket money, Tamiya Fletcher looks nice too...Good job so far Phil, watching this.

This kit knocks the Tamiye Fletcher into a cocked-hat,although the Tamiya kit is good ,this is superb!! Phil
Phil Reeder Posted January 31, 2009 Author Posted January 31, 2009 The three main deck-houses have been painted ,and attached to the model. One word of warning, decal no 22,the aft deck-house walk-way,is a very complicated design.I tried to put it on in one piece, however it folded in on itself, and I was unable to salvage it.It would have been better to cut it into two or three pieces, and put them on separately. There also was a slight problem with the fit of the mid-ships deck-house,it didn`t seem to fit the recess in the main-deck to well, however I solved this by carefully sanding the edges of the deckhouse. Bye For now Phil
daz greenwood Posted January 31, 2009 Posted January 31, 2009 Looks really nice Phil. The new Revell Fletcher looks nice. So I may treat myself to one.
Phil Reeder Posted January 31, 2009 Author Posted January 31, 2009 Looks really nice Phil. The new Revell Fletcher looks nice. So I may treat myself to one. Hi Daz,you`re right ,the RoG Fletcher is a nice kit,it was a toss-up,whether I did that or the Buchanan,350th won in the end!Phil
Roger Torgeson Posted January 31, 2009 Posted January 31, 2009 Phil, Outstanding start on the camouflage, painting complicated patterns as this is quit a challenge. I’m sure when you have the model complete you will have a 1st rate piece of “Eye Candy”…… sweet looking

Phil Reeder Posted February 1, 2009 Author Posted February 1, 2009 Included in the kit is a little thing ,I thought was house for a game of Monopoly, but it wasn`t,it`s a jig to ensure that you get the correct angle for bending PE.What a novel, simple idea,I`m keeping these bits ,they`ll come in useful for bending other PE stuff. Bye Phil
daz greenwood Posted February 1, 2009 Posted February 1, 2009 That is a good idea Phil. Forward planning from Dragon I see.
Phil Reeder Posted February 2, 2009 Author Posted February 2, 2009 The Funnels, bridge, and Torpedo tubes ,have been put together and test fitted to the model.I still have to attach the PE ladder to the fore funnel,I must say that I`m very taken with the PE included in the kit,it`s very robust, but maintains a scale appearence. Also,it`s easily removed from the fret.I`m enjoying this one! Bye Phil
Phil Reeder Posted February 3, 2009 Author Posted February 3, 2009 The Bridge, funnels, and torpedo tubes, have been painted, and fixed to the model. No problems nere.Next up is a start on the smaller details, and then the 5" guns, Bye Phil
Phil Reeder Posted February 4, 2009 Author Posted February 4, 2009 I`ve made a mistake in the placement of the PE bridge supports, this was kindly pointed out by a friend of mine(thanks Roger!),and ,luckily,I was able to put them in the correct place .I`ve put together the 5" gun turrets, and the gunnery. For the gunnery radar,I used a part from a WEM PE set,USN Radars. There is a choice of barrels included in the kit ,with,or without,blast-covers.just another example of the thought that has gone into this kit,I chose those with the covers.Hopefully, there will be no more cock-ups by me,so it`s well on the way to being finished. Bye Phil
Phil Reeder Posted February 7, 2009 Author Posted February 7, 2009 (edited) This kit contains a multitude of very small parts, I sometimes think I`m doing a 700th scale kit.All the depth-charge thrower re-loads are seperate parts, each located in a tiny hole on the deck.takes quite a bit of doing for an old codger like me,but I got there in the end.I`ve started adding the detail on the aft deck-house.More tiny bits!Bye Phil Edited February 7, 2009 by Phil Reeder
jackal Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 I have been poking in Phil and you are doing a smash up job there! The paint and mouldings are very nice and convincing Sir.Keep up the great work.Cheers Kevin
Phil Reeder Posted February 9, 2009 Author Posted February 9, 2009 Most of the small parts have now been attached.I`ve made a start to the PE,around the Bridge area.I`m using PE deck-railing from Tom`s Modelworks,it`s a bit more robust than some other makes, and doesn`t need such careful handling. On the home-straight now! Bye Phil
AnonymousDFB1 Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 Missed this one up till now Phil, Looks real good.

Bye Phil What a BRILLIANT idea Phil. Cracking work as usual. Tony
Phil Reeder Posted February 10, 2009 Author Posted February 10, 2009 All the railings on the inboard deckhouses has been added, and I`ve given the decks and hull a light dusting of MIG powders rust, just got the ships boats, rigging and maindeck railings to do,The next post will be on RFI,and I planning to give the kit(not my build of it)a "Stricly Come Kitbashing" score.See you later,Phil
Phil Reeder Posted February 11, 2009 Author Posted February 11, 2009 The finished model is on: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.p...c=27272&hl=
