F-32 Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 I spent the day at Charlwood on Sunday, arrived at 11.00 and departed at 3.00, pretty much had the place to myself. It's a great little collection, highly recommended if you can get down there. Radleigh Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 Some of them look in quite a sorry state. I haven't been there since I was a kid, Must get back there. Nice shots Tony!

goose Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 Nice pics thanks for posting, shame they are in such a state, pity they cant get them under cover, befrore they are lost forever.
TerryUK Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 Great Photographs, Makes me feel a bit sad to see the state of some of these birds. Thanks for sharing some great photography on what looks like a great day out.
F-32 Posted March 13, 2012 Author Posted March 13, 2012 They are trying to get a building put up to house them but apparently the local council is being difficult. They reckon because it's next to the runway at Gatwick some pilots might confuse it for the airport and try to land there.................... The aircraft are slowly being restored, the Sea Hawk is pretty fresh and they are working on a Hunter T7 as well. The Bucc was recently started up (last month) and one of the Shackletons also runs. The Lightning is mint and is very well looked after, I'd say the sadest of the lot is the Gannet which isn't doing too well, the others ok it's just faded paint. I've emailed them volunteering my time so hopefully I'll get put to good use at the weekends!

Maybe once I've got work full time I could commit and stay at my parents over the weekend.
SimonR Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 Great photos as usual Tony. Looks an interesting place, certainly a spot of weathering on the exhibits! May have to borrow the odd pic for the AMG website if you don't mind! Cheer Simon
Dad 10 Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 Nice to see it up close, ive only ever seen from 'Final Approach' to Gatwick............ which is still a hell of a walk from the terminal. Richard McC

Richard McC Ssshhh!!! It'll end up as a Ryanair stand!!! That Jag is great reference for a project I'm dreaming up.. As for the Gannet, I believe my brother has a spinner off of the one that used to be at the Cardiff museum before it got scrapped, and apparently it's from the same squadron, as the colours are the same.. Which reminds me, I need to finish the Gannet I'm working on..
Greased Lightning Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 Thanks for posting these, some great shots and lovely hi-res as well. A great reference sourse.
F-32 Posted March 13, 2012 Author Posted March 13, 2012 Glad you like them chaps! Just in case anyone was wondering, shot 33 is of the Bucc's bomb bay! Simon, yeah of course, grab whatever you need.
ExRAF Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 A nice set of photographs! I particularly like the Wasp/Whirlwind shot.
CobolMan Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 Many thanks for posting those pics, there is a personal connection to 3 of them as my late dad flew the Gannet from Hermes in the '60s when he was with 849B and both Sea Princes in the early '70s when he was with 750 at Lossie.
richw_82 Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 Don't mistake faded paint for neglect anyone - the guys at Gatwick work miracles. As mentioned by F-32 further up, a good number of the aircraft in the pictures are still 'live' in every way.
FalkeEins Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 well I was last there in 1992 and looking at these pics nothing much seems to have changed, except for the tarps...and the Lightning. At least the collection is still there
John R Posted March 26, 2012 Posted March 26, 2012 I thought that it was private. Can anyone get in and when? John
Chris W. Balmer Posted March 26, 2012 Posted March 26, 2012 They have various open days but its best to call them to arrange a visit fella
