Looking for some pictures of GR5's with the white wash paint scheme, anyone know where I can find them?

Cheers

So,The cammo's the same.

They weren't actually. The GR5's were in Dark/Lichen Green and wore white individual blotch-spots (for want of a better description!). The GR7's posted above are in Dark Sea/Camo Grey and have a white wrap around scheme on them .

I'll see if I can find a few pictures......

Did a quick "Google" couldn't find anything immediately, but I'll try to scan some photo's tomorrow - in the meantime here one I built a few years ago - many years ago, readers of SAMI may remember this !!

I have some artwork that I'll upload tomorrow, but Bill's spot on as ther were two winter schemes.

I have the details....somewhere!!! Anyway off the top of my head the scheme depicted on my Hasegawa 1/72nd model was used on 1 Sqn's initial GR5 deployment to Bardufoss in 1990/91 (that long ago!!!). I don't recall seeing any more photo's of winter schemes until the GR7 deployments - demonstrated by Merv's pic's (and of course in the Airfix 1/72nd kit!!!!!), by which time the "greys" had taken over from the "Greens".

Cheers Guys, Im assuming the paint was also a whitewash i.e. not permenant and came/wore off over time like desert pink?

Yep, it was removable finish. I keep meaning to do a "Cold Winter" GR.5 and wondered how I would do it - maybe gloss the camo finish, then apply the whitewash, let it touch dry then go over it with a piece of Scotchbrite to rub away at corners.

Just a thought, Jonothan, on the GR3's the serial numbers' surrounding colour was left- being crudely painted around so there was a rough rectangle of the dark green. (on the other side the serial was painted on grey so didn't apply)

these profiles of the GR5 show the serials on top of white, which would suggest painting them back on or carefully painting around individual characters of the serial.

On the GR3, whitewash was painted up to the roundels and fin flashes leaving rough edges- I assume a similar application of white wash on the GR5's

a small detail but hopefully helpful.

hope that makes sense.

I painted my GR5 in Halfords primer white first, then applied the blotches with Maskol, painted the NATO Green . then masked it off with straight edged tape (re-applying maskol as necessary) and then adding the Lichen Green. Another one of my started projects (the cockpit tub was taken from the sprues and looked at!) is one in 1/48th...one day (when I finish the GR7 that I started LAST winter!!!)

Nice finish Les!

Regarding the GR5 scheme - from photo's I've seen of the participating aircraft the white blotches had a hard edge - not nicely feathered like your '111! The GR7 scheme on the other hand had nice feathered edges - just like your '111!!!

Must find the photo's.......

When I did my GR5 I finished it in the standard Litchen and NATO Green colours and applied the decals. Then I masked the outline of the of the white areas with masking fluid and oversprayed the whole model with white paint.

Some of the GR5s had hard edges to the white, others had a soft edge.

It wore off, but it was more due to the wet conditions in Norway that Desert style erosion - so lots of little streaks

Maybe there's the genesis of a Group Build there - Cold Winter Harriers all using different techniques to do the whitewash!

Harrier Group Build anyone ?
