OzH Posted June 27, 2008 Posted June 27, 2008 (edited) I was casting an eye over the stash, trying to decide what to do next, looking for something nice and easy, OOB all the way and something that would make a dint in the pile of unbuilt kits.. I came up with this plan! Build three kits, OOB, same kit different decals!! Picked this up at Plastic Pastimes in Poole for £12.99, going to do it in the black cat marking... Had this for a while and will do it in 1st Gulf War markings And this looks plain boaring, So I got these! Edited September 26, 2008 by OzH
OzH Posted June 27, 2008 Author Posted June 27, 2008 So, whats in the box And this is what I've done in the first 24 hours!
bexwh773 Posted June 27, 2008 Posted June 27, 2008 Oz Ol' Chap, everyone knows I cant stand Tonkas (quick look over me shoulder for Merv & his baseball bat) but I have to be honest, as normal youre doing a cracking job and your choice of decals looks very interesting, actually Im looking forwards to see the finished aircraft. Bex
OzH Posted June 28, 2008 Author Posted June 28, 2008 Not even 48 hours into this and I seem to have got a whole lot done!! I think this is most of the sub assemblies completed. Got some filling and fileing to do around the cockpit, and some sanding on the rest. As its a nice day I plan to sit out in the sun with some plastic and some sanding sticks!! I didn't want to fit the main wings yet as there would be some difficult joins to eliminate with them in place. I test fitted and can get them into place once the seams have been sorted. The tail plains, the same, just will have to remove the hub (sqare bit) and will have them fixed instead of movable as the kit would have you do (its a model after all, not a toy!) The original plan was to build these three OOB, cockpits closed, nice and quick. I made the "mistake" of checking out my after market stash and found a whole load of stuff for the Tonka and may Just decide to use these two great little sets from Pargon Only problem is, I only have one set of each and none of the normal sources seem to have any in stock, so if anyone wants to help out......
Guest snipersmudge Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 great set of colour schemes and fast work so far!!
spike7451 Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 Looking good so far, My Tornado sticky bits.. Bexy,....I'll give you a heed start as I've gotta find my cricket bat..!!
hatchet Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 Looking great Oz! Merv, don't worry 'bout Bex, she really loves Fins, she just don't want to admit it!
Neil Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 Only problem is, I only have one set of each and none of the normal sources seem to have any in stock, so if anyone wants to help out...... I has-a-plenty of them there bits and pieces in stock. Having said that I have just delivered a large order to Hannants, a couple of hours ago in fact, so they now also have them back in stock. (They may not of had time to load them up onto their web site yet though!).
Bandwagon 106 Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 Nice work there Oz Are the cockpits detailled like that from the box? If they are, maybe it's Tonka time for me!(the first and last time I ever use that name!) I've tried the"same type, different markings" multiple builds before, with various results! I tried 3 A-4s once, a humpless E from VA-192, a humped E from VMA-211 and an F from VA-55. The Dragons E and the F were finished at about the same time, whilst the Marines E was finished last year, twelve months after the project began. Yet, I managed to finish 3 other Skyhawks, a C, E and M during another attempt. Strange! Good work anyway Joel

If they are, maybe it's Tonka time for me!(the first and last time I ever use that name!) Yep, they come like that, dead easy and with the canopy closed as good as you need! OzH Posted June 29, 2008 Author Posted June 29, 2008 Next update, should help JohnnyRed... as the main lump of the fusulage comes in two parts (no real suprise) but with the join along the side, under the wing, I thought cleaning up the joint would be easier without the wings in place. The instructions, however, suggest you put the wings in place first... This is what I did.. Joined top and bottom fusulage, filled, cleaned the joint and rescribed the panel lines Got the wings together, hot screwdriver to connect the mechenism Shoved the wings in, the plastic had enough "give" to let them in Strengthened the back of the cockpit section with plastic tube, and let it set... Glued the two parts along the bottom, and let it set... Jemmied the top up to get some glue in... And got a near perfect joint! Then did it all agian, and again! All three setting over night.
hatchet Posted June 29, 2008 Posted June 29, 2008 That nose/body join looks near-perfect Oz, great work!
periklis_sale Posted June 29, 2008 Posted June 29, 2008 coming along nicely mate!! bet you have your hands full!!!!
OzH Posted June 29, 2008 Author Posted June 29, 2008 Here's the next installment... Firstly the intakes, no problems really, carefull dry fitting, just glue to the cockpit and the lower fusulage, by the wheel well and let dry. Can't really see in the picture but a good fit here as well. Top tip, do one, let it dry completly then do the other side, otherwise you may be pulling against tacky glue and get a little slippage. I did on one of them Next was the tail. To start with its too thing at the base, so I used a little spare sprue as a spacer I'm useing the Paragon fin correction (on one of them anyway) so I cut the fin, Added the fin parts And put it all together
brooksy Posted June 29, 2008 Posted June 29, 2008 Blimey Aub, that' great work, and speedy too. Some good modelling tips to be memorised for later Should be finished by Tuesday then? Keep it up mate. Regards Andy

OzH Posted July 6, 2008 Author Posted July 6, 2008 (edited) Well, back from a week in Zargreb, supurb place if you ever get the chance, clean, smart and really friendly, I had a great time. Before I left I managed to get the wing leading edge's on, really badly fitting, the worst part of this kit so far. I'd suggest that if your building this, attache these to the top and bottom of the main fusulage brefore putting them together. filled and sanded them and they don't look to bad now I have also sorted out the intakes, the port intake has a badly molded front inside end It was the same on all three Filled with some plastic strip and filed.... More to come.... Edited July 6, 2008 by OzH
periklis_sale Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 its coming along nicely my friend! keep up the good work!
