Richard E Posted April 19, 2008 Posted April 19, 2008 Just doing some research for a future project, one of Accurate Armour's WMIK Land Rovers. AA's kit doesn't include a radio or aerial fit but I've found quite a few pictures of Royal Marines' vehicles operating in Afghanistan fitted with wing mounted aerial boxes and what appear to be radio racks but I haven't been able to find anyrthing showing the layout of the radios themselves. Can anyone help?
Dads203 Posted April 19, 2008 Posted April 19, 2008 (edited) Hi Richard, I suspect that the WMIK's have a clip in kit rather than a FFR fit, As an ex signaller myself most of the infantry land rovers were fitted with a clansman clip in kit, this allowed the crew to dismount the radio and use it as a manpack. We used Land Rovers with a dedicated radio fit (Land Rover FFR) These were hard wired with all the misc equipment such as 12V batteries, TUAAM boxes on the front fenders and normally a bracket for a Racal PU 8 mast on the side. The radios I used were the VRC 321 (HF) and the VRC 353 (VHF) and the PRC344 with a clip in kit (UHF) ground to air comms The clip in kits I have used can be fitted to a Landrover GS in about 30 minutes and they take the standard PRC range of radios (PRC =Manpack) Clansman Twin VHF VRC353Z fit on the botton, cypher units were fitted in the back, a VRC 321 HF set is on the top left with the SURF unit on the right. Fitted in an AFV436 ( my old wagon) Twin VRC353 fit with a PRC 344 ( manpack) using a clip in kit in the center Hope that helps mate Dan Edited April 19, 2008 by Dads203

buccymad Posted April 19, 2008 Posted April 19, 2008 (edited) use them in basra ,we useed 351`s fitted to the tuaam`s on a manpack ,incase we had to bug out! same with the prc344`s ,you wouldnt get a 353 in there ,not enought room in the back p.s the manpack wasnt the standard frame ,but a n i. patrol sack with batteries in the side pouches Edited April 19, 2008 by buccy mad

Greg B Posted April 22, 2008 Posted April 22, 2008 Thanks for the answers gentlemen: so if I try to sculpt a rucksack shape from Miliput I'm going to be fairly close?Richard Depends, they probably would be using Bowman or Satcoms and HF and not Clansman! There isnt much room in a WMIK for a full fit either. Bet thats muddied the waters now!
buccymad Posted April 22, 2008 Posted April 22, 2008 Depends, they probably would be using Bowman or Satcoms and HF and not Clansman! mod procurement strategy =order it ,protract the developmet,so that it goes massivly overbudget, give it to the troops just after when they really need it,finally get it working properly just as it goes out of service!!!! i had heard about bowman when i first joined up ,still wasnt in service when i left 10 years later!!
