silverburn Posted December 11, 2009 Posted December 11, 2009 Ok, signing this one off from the build thread here. Tales of woe and deliberate (honest!) mistakes lie therein... Only real difference is that the a/c nmbers are now on, and the canopy is closed...not without pain or smudging of decals, and many curse words. Not much else to add that hasn't been covered in the build thread, so here are the final few pics!
HOUSTON Posted December 11, 2009 Posted December 11, 2009 silverburn STUNNING finish !!!! {hope the wife's labor went well } HOUSTON
silverburn Posted December 11, 2009 Author Posted December 11, 2009 Forgot to add - broken decal and port/starboard lights getting set in next week! Cheers guys
~Dan~ Posted December 12, 2009 Posted December 12, 2009 Awesome! I'm off to look at aircraft profiles to see if I can find something in silver. Despite your woes, you have made me want to have a go.
Peter B Posted December 12, 2009 Posted December 12, 2009 I think your Lightning looks really good. Well done. From your build notes I think you were concerned that you had dirtiesdit too much, but I don't think you have. I am no officianado of the marque, but I understand that some of these aircraft were very 'used' looking and were not the cleanest. Great effort. Peter
Fmk.6john Posted December 12, 2009 Posted December 12, 2009 That rub'n'buff sure looks good, I am gonna get me some of that for my next NMF build, don't forget to put the wingtip nav lights on before you put her on display . Well done! Regards, JB.
GreyGhost Posted December 12, 2009 Posted December 12, 2009 Excellent Lightning ! Love that finish ... Gregg
woody37 Posted December 12, 2009 Posted December 12, 2009 Absolutely gorgeous. You've already sold me on the rub n buff stuff, I got some off Ebay last week to use on my up ans coming Comet build. Need to add a Lighting to the stash now as well !!!!!
Mentalguru Posted December 12, 2009 Posted December 12, 2009 Absolutely beautiful. The "Rub n Buff" thing was big in the 80's, but I always thought it wasn't particularly permanent? How do you get round that- or do you thin it with something evil before spraying it etc??
Dave Gibson Posted December 12, 2009 Posted December 12, 2009 Nice one SB. I don't know what you were fretting about, it looks a treat. Managed to do any modelling since the arrival? Dave
dieselweasel Posted December 12, 2009 Posted December 12, 2009 Silverburn Absolutely Brilliant, well done Jim

I sealed mine with "new" Klear (neat and with a brush), before bedding down decals with a normal coat of Gloss. Gloss direct onto R&B dulled it hideously...Klear only took off 20-30% of the shine which is better than nothing. I probably didn't need to gloss, but I wanted 100% peace of mind it was sealed. Need to take care painting over the top of it too - I'd recommend masking off sections you need normal colour for.

Dave Barely! Started a Stuka, and will be closing up the weathering soon. On automatic pilot though...lack of sleep = lack of attention to detail. Details such as a fit gap 2 inches long... Baby treats screaming as an endurance olympic sport at the moment - especially since her volume control has 2 settings - 0 and 10. Though she's trying to find 11 as we speak...
