Doug Rogers Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 Bit of a long shot really, but does anybody have any pics of what the interior of an S6B looked like. Managed to get the Testors kit recently in 1/48 scale and wanted to try and scratch some sort of basic interior. TIA
Edgar Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 (edited) Yes; there was a book (one of a pair,) published in 1980, by a gentleman named Hiroshi Seo, which has a load of cockpit photos. They're a little distorted, in some cases, doubtless due to his use of a fisheye lens, but immensely useful. Copyright restrictions mean that I can't put a copy on here, and the paper used makes copies extremely "iffy," but, if you send me an E-mail address, I'll see what I can do. It was the S6B which started me off on the search for the early Spitfire cockpit colour, and I'm fairly certain that it, too, was painted in a colour matched by Humbrol 90. Of course, if you're going to Yeovilton, I might be persuaded to bring the book(s) with me, but I'll probably have them attached to me by a chain......... Edgar Edited February 10, 2009 by Edgar
Doug Rogers Posted February 10, 2009 Author Posted February 10, 2009 Hi Edgar, Thanks for the reply. I've sent you my e-mail address, anything you can supply would be great, I'm just trying to establish the basic clock layout so don't worry too much about the picture quality, I can always squint! You probably won't see much of it when it's buttoned up anyway, but you know what us modellers are like!

Doug Rogers Posted February 17, 2009 Author Posted February 17, 2009 Thanks John, that's the same picture Edgar sent me, so I reckon it must be about the only decent pic around. Got my Seafire 17 conversion kit the other day, must say it was beautifully packaged, it felt like unwrapping some jewellery from Harrods (not that I'd know what what that would be like). Perfectly wrapped in brown paper, and the contents wrapped in tissue paper! Whoever does your packaging is doing a great job.

Thanks for your comments. Cheers John
Doug Rogers Posted February 18, 2009 Author Posted February 18, 2009 If you've access to some line drawings, they'd be gratefully accepted John.

Doug Rogers Posted February 18, 2009 Author Posted February 18, 2009 That worked just fine John, thanks very much.

Doug Rogers Posted February 18, 2009 Author Posted February 18, 2009 Good Lord! I may have to make this some sort of marathon build with all this lovely info. Don't know if you know John, but I believe the engine in the S6B was a direct relative of the Griffon. I wonder if a resin Griffon engine like the one in the Aires Spitfire 22/24 detail set would look right in the S6B frame.

I wonder if a resin Griffon engine like the one in the Aires Spitfire 22/24 detail set would look right in the S6B frame. The Griffon was developed from the RR Buzzard via the "R" in the S6B but in truth there is no real similarity as the dimensions changed and items such as the camshaft drives were moved from the back to the front. Really quite different engines. John
A.Lake Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 Hello gentlemen, does anybody have any information on the seat used on the S6 series? I have seen various cut away drawings which show a typical RAF pre war dural type seat, but some literature suggests a much simpler arrangement. Thanks.
Doug Rogers Posted February 20, 2009 Author Posted February 20, 2009 Hi there, I'm at work at the moment, but I can PM you the couple of pics John and Edgar have sent me later on today. As you say it looks like a very basic seat arrangement, looks like the pilot was basically sitting on the floor, but then I guess you'd expect a racing aircraft to be fairly spartan.
Edgar Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 I have a Supermarine drawing, for the seat and harness, but it states that it's for N247 & N248 only. It's somewhat over A4 size, so scanning could be difficult, but I could post an A3 photocopy? Edgar
