canberra kid Posted October 19, 2010 Posted October 19, 2010 (edited) Well here go's, my first WIP! I'm not sure how long this will take as there is quite a lot of work involved. This is what I'm aiming for! First photo is the fuselage halves marked out for the new windows. John Edited October 19, 2010 by canberra kid
Mike Posted October 19, 2010 Posted October 19, 2010 This should be fun. Have you got the decals sorted yet?
Col. Posted October 19, 2010 Posted October 19, 2010 That's a bit different John, don't think I've ever seen one modelled before, will watch your progress with interest. How do you intend to represent the various lumps and fittings she is adorned with? Was looking at that fat tail in particular and how best to avoid adding too much weight in that area.
canberra kid Posted October 19, 2010 Author Posted October 19, 2010 This should be fun. Have you got the decals sorted yet? Hi Mike and Col, I've not got the decals sorted, the hardest part for me will be the "US. Department of Commerce" on the fuselage I can only print them on my PC on ink jet paper, not the best option! The blue Chet line is quite easy I'll do the same as I did on my NOAA C.130 ( Uncal sam's weather girls) use decal. As for the lumps and bumps Col I'm not sure yet I'll have to have a root around and see what I can find. The Ray-dome under the nose I'll make from Milliput, well that's the plan! John
Romeo Alpha Yankee Posted October 19, 2010 Posted October 19, 2010 John, Looks like a great project. The radome under the forward fuselage looks the same as the EP-3E one. Lonestar Models in Texas do a EP-3 conversion. Would save you a bit of time. I have a friend who was also going to attempt this conversion sometime.
kspriss Posted October 19, 2010 Posted October 19, 2010 Hiya John...wow, nice project!!..you have probably already looked this up but Airliners.net has the following 15 pics... http://www.airliners.net/search/photo.sear...ion&submit= might be useful...and as usual ill be following this one with great interest!! Steve
canberra kid Posted October 20, 2010 Author Posted October 20, 2010 Trojan thanks for the heads up, I'd not seen the conversion, it dose look the same but I'm going to press on with the milliput option at $24 it's a wee bit too costly for this project. Steve I have seen them; very useful they are too! It's N43RF "Miss Piggy" I'm going to build. The two airframes are slightly different so I have to be sure I get the detail correct right from the start! John

I wonder how much the price differs between the Revell and Hasegawa kits over there. Down here the Revell kit was sligthly more expensive as I recall.
kspriss Posted October 20, 2010 Posted October 20, 2010 hmmm...cant find a revell one online, but the hasegawa one is about the £33 mark steve
canberra kid Posted October 20, 2010 Author Posted October 20, 2010 Hi Steve As Trojan rightly says it is the Hasegawa kit re boxed with new decals, I was lucky I got two of them for £9.99 each from model zone in Manchester I think, some time ago. The other one is going to be a NASA P.3. Now for an update, I've cut out the new windows and added the Radar on the tail using a Buddy- Buddy refueling pod from an F.18 (another bargain from MZ) It's not quite the right diameter but with a bit of filling and blending I think it's going to look fine. John
Romeo Alpha Yankee Posted October 21, 2010 Posted October 21, 2010 That is coming along nicely John. Have you noticed the floor in the kit yet. You may have noticed the low window on the LHS. If you are going to keep this then it needs bringing up to the height of the other you have added yourself. THis was a nice little doosey Hasegawa overlooked when they made the moulds.

Hi Trojen Thanks for flagging that up, that's exactly the sort of thing I'd miss in my head long rush top get all the lumps and bumps sorted. It looks like on this occasion I may be lucky, see what you think of this photo. John Edited October 21, 2010 by canberra kid
canberra kid Posted October 21, 2010 Author Posted October 21, 2010 Tail radar fitted and rubbed down, next job tomorrow the dish under the nose, I just hope I have enough milliput! John

Who would have kown that the one P-3 you are building would have had a window in that spot?

Who would have kown that the one P-3 you are building would have had a window in that spot? Trojan it would be interesting to know which P.3 Mk./Airframe Hasegawa used as reference? But as I've learned over the many years building Canberra's you can never take anything for granted! John
canberra kid Posted October 22, 2010 Author Posted October 22, 2010 (edited) Some shots of the early sages of the under nose radar. That's all my milliput gone! When it's set I can start to rub it down and get the shape more like. John Edited October 22, 2010 by canberra kid

canberra kid Posted October 24, 2010 Author Posted October 24, 2010 No not an undiscovered asteroid, it's the nose radar dome filled and rubbed down, all being well it should be set for a dollop of paint soon. John
Ed Russell Posted October 25, 2010 Posted October 25, 2010 You could have used a door knob! It's not a Canberra!! Very nice - I'm watching this one unfold. canberra kid Posted October 25, 2010 Author Posted October 25, 2010 You could have used a door knob! It's not a Canberra!! Very nice - I'm watching this one unfold. LOL! Now you tell me! Why didn't I think of that, it would have been cheaper than milliput! I'm still filling and sanding it trying to get it as smooth as I can, every time I think I've got it another hole or dent appears, oh well that what makes this hobby such fun! As for not being a Canberra I'm sure if I try hard enough I can find some kind of connection, may be it's flown over Canberra at some time? Have you seen it Trojan? John
canberra kid Posted October 25, 2010 Author Posted October 25, 2010 Well hear it is radome finished. It won't win the world milliput radome competition but it'll do for me. John
Arie Posted October 25, 2010 Posted October 25, 2010 What's your trick cutting out windows so cleanly? I always manage to get misshapen, uneven holes that usually require overlay with plasticard! Yours are beautiful! How do you do it?!!
Kev1n Posted October 25, 2010 Posted October 25, 2010 yeah I'd like to know that.... interesting project.

Arie and Kevin, I'll let you in to a secret, they are my best ones yet! The windows have been one of the thing I was dreading doing most on this conversation, but I went with the old but true saying "measure twice cut ones" and it worked (this time) after marking out I drilled a pilot hole as big as I could in the middle of the window then with a new blade cut as close to the line as I dear them finished off with a flat needle file, thank goodness it worked!
